Making A Home Your Family Will Love

When it comes to creating a gorgeous interior space, your home will only be as beautiful as your family allows it to be. If your children don't respect the space, your home will quickly fall back into disrepair, which is why I started focusing more and more on home and garden a few years ago. I was committed to creating a great space that was just as clean and gorgeous as it was functional, and I was really surprised to see how much of a difference my efforts made. Within a few short years, my place really seemed a lot more open, airy, and inviting. Check out this blog for great ideas on making a family-oriented home.

Problems With Your Fireplace? Signs You Need To Call For Repairs

by Alice Howard

If you want to use your fireplace this winter, make sure it's in good shape. Problems with your fireplace can create health hazards for you and your family. The first thing you should do is schedule a service call. Your fireplace should get cleaned at least once a year. This is especially important if your fireplace gets a lot of use during the winter months. You should also call for fireplace repairs as soon as a problem arises. If you're not sure if your fireplace needs repairs, read the list provided below. If you notice any of the problems listed here, schedule fireplace repairs right away.

The Refractory Panels are Cracked

If you're worried about your fireplace, look inside the firebox. You'll see four refractory panels. If you see cracks in any of the panels, you need to call for repairs as soon as possible. Don't use your fireplace until repairs can get taken care of. These panels keep the flames contained inside the firebox. If there are cracks in the panels, flames and hot embers can get behind the walls. If that happens, you're at an increased risk for fireplace and chimney fires. A fireplace repair service can replace the refractory panels for you.

There's Moisture in the Firebox

If you've got some moisture buildup inside the firebox, now's the time to call for repairs. Most people inspect for puddles inside the firebox. But, moisture buildup on the walls can also cause problems. Moisture is a sign that your chimney has a leak somewhere. If left alone for too long, the mortar can decay. Unfortunately, that could cause your fireplace to collapse. To prevent serious damage, call for repairs at the first sign of moisture.

Your House Fills With Smoke

If your home fills with smoke when you use your fireplace, schedule repairs right away. There are a few things that can cause the smoky buildup. If you haven't had your chimney cleaned in a few years, schedule a service call. If that doesn't solve the problem, it's time for repairs. You could have a damaged chimney flue. Or, there could be cracks inside the fireplace.

You Smell Gas in Your Home

If you have a gas fireplace, it's time to check for odors. If you smell gas when you use your fireplace, you'll need to call a repair technician right away. The gas odor could be a sign that your fireplace has a leak.
