Making A Home Your Family Will Love

When it comes to creating a gorgeous interior space, your home will only be as beautiful as your family allows it to be. If your children don't respect the space, your home will quickly fall back into disrepair, which is why I started focusing more and more on home and garden a few years ago. I was committed to creating a great space that was just as clean and gorgeous as it was functional, and I was really surprised to see how much of a difference my efforts made. Within a few short years, my place really seemed a lot more open, airy, and inviting. Check out this blog for great ideas on making a family-oriented home.

Finding The Right Air Conditioner For Your Room Or Apartment

by Alice Howard

Keeping cool in the summertime is difficult if you live in a warm climate and do not have air conditioning in your home. The solution might be a portable or room size air conditioner, and if you get the right size unit, you might be able to cool your whole apartment or home.

Portable Air Conditioning

Many appliance companies sell portable air conditioners that sit in the room and plug into a standard 110-volt outlet. Installation involves plugging it in and putting the vent tube kit in a window to exhaust hot air outside.

Portable air conditioners come in different sizes with BTU (British Thermal Units) ratings that range from 5,000 to 12,000. The higher the BTU rating, the more effective the air conditioning unit will be at cooling the room.

Check with the manufacturer or a salesperson when you look at these units if you need help choosing the right size for your situation, and check the box. Often the room size the unit will handle is printed on the box. Advantages of portable units are that you can buy small, personal-sized units that work well on your desk or in a small space, and you can take them with you.

Window Air Conditioners

Like the portable units, window air conditioners are designed to cool one or two rooms, and the effectiveness depends greatly on the BTU rating of the air conditioner. The biggest difference between these two options is that the window unit sits in the window frame and saves a lot of space in the room.

The window units require an open window, and for many people, that is a concern because it is a way for people to get into the house. If you don't mind the open window, the window units are very efficient and will keep a decent size room cool and comfortable.

Evaporative Coolers

If you are looking for a more cost-effective solution, some manufacturers also make evaporative coolers that use water and ice to cool the air blowing through a fan. In dry climates, evaporative coolers work pretty well, but they tend to put out a lot of water, making them less effective in humid environments.

The cooler is basically a fan that has a large sponge on the back and a water tank to keep the sponge moist. The colder the water, the colder the air coming through the cooler will be. Many people add ice to the water tank to make these coolers work better, but be aware that they can cause condensation on things in the room.
